Developer calls on pupils to name new homes
When it came to naming the streets and homes on a new housing development at Caistor, Lincolnshire, developer Cannon Kirk called on a local school for inspiration.

The first phase of Romans Walk, off New Kelsey Road, has been launched, with pupils from Caistor Yarborough School selecting dual themes connecting the town’s ancient origins with its recent history.

Cannon Kirk sought to canvas the local community for the street and design names of the two, three and four-bedroom homes on site and decided to consult the specialist arts college.

Assistant Headteacher Pam Watson came up with a competition between the different school houses, comprising mixed age groups of 11 to 16 year-olds. They investigated the site and its history, asking parents and older members of the community for their thoughts and memories.

The winning names, selected by Cannon Kirk, feature Roman emperors for the streets, including Hadrian Way, Augustus Walk and Nero Close, reflecting the origins of the site, while house types, like Maple, Birch and Holly, revive ward titles of the old Caistor Hospital, which previously stood there.

“It was a good, all-round exercise, as the pupils worked together in teams and undertook substantial research,” said Mrs Watson.

“They talked to their families and to local residents, finding out about the town’s history, from the Roman occupation, to the latter-day hospital, which many people still remember.”

Cannon Kirk Chief Executive Officer Michael Broughton commented:

“We wanted Romans Walk to be in keeping with its environment and felt local students were the right contacts to help us in naming the new streets and houses. They came up with the perfect solution to help this development become an integral part of the community.”
